Batumi International Airport is expanding again after a record year for passenger traffic.
Operator TAV Georgia says it is investing $5 million in the airport in 2026, with the current upgrade expected to increase annual capacity from around 1.3 million to 1.7 million passengers.
The timing is significant. In 2025, Batumi Airport handled a reco
rd 1,230,200 passengers — 29% more than in 2024 — bringing traffic close to the airport’s stated existing capacity.
What Is Changing at Batumi Airport?
The existing passenger terminal covers around 8,000 m², and approximately 1,000 m² of additional operational and administrative space is being added.
The number of check-in counters is increasing from 14 to 18, while passport-control facilities are also being expanded. Together, the works are expected to increase overall airport capacity by approximately 22–25%.
TAV Georgia expects the current stage of work to be completed by the end of 2026.
Batumi Is Adding New Connections
Airport development is happening alongside changes in Batumi’s route network.
Regular Tbilisi–Batumi flights returned on June 25, with Georgian Airways operating four flights per week during the summer schedule.
International connectivity is expanding as well. At the end of June, FlyOne launched direct flights between Chisinau and Batumi.
TAV Georgia has also confirmed negotiations with Georgian Airways over a possible direct Batumi–Milan route, although no launch has yet been confirmed. Other European destinations are also being considered.
Passenger Growth Is Not Automatic
The expansion comes after exceptionally strong growth in 2025, but airport traffic can fluctuate significantly throughout the year.
More recent data shows that passenger traffic at Batumi Airport was around 3% higher year-on-year in June 2026.
For a seasonal destination such as Batumi, the bigger question is therefore not simply how many passengers the airport can handle during July and August, but whether improved connectivity can support stronger demand outside the traditional summer peak.
What It Means for Batumi
The airport expansion is important beyond aviation.
Batumi continues to add hotels, apartments, restaurants and tourism infrastructure. Increasing airport capacity removes one potential constraint on the city’s ability to receive more international visitors.
But more airport capacity does not automatically mean more tourists.
The real impact will depend on whether airlines actually add routes, whether existing flights maintain strong passenger demand and, importantly, whether Batumi can attract more visitors outside the summer season.
Our view: expanding Batumi Airport is a positive infrastructure step, but the more interesting story will be what happens next. If new European routes become sustainable and the tourist season gradually extends beyond summer, the impact on Batumi could be considerably more important than the terminal expansion itself.
